The Modern Friendship Bracelet: A Twist on a Childhood Classic

My ten-year-old daughter came home from school the other day with a few brightly
colored embroidery-floss bracelets tied around her wrist—and a couple around her
ankles, too. The colorful half-hitch knots immediately transported me back to
childhood.

When I commented on them, she explained that she and her friends had made the
bracelets for one another. They were supposed to keep them on until they naturally fell
off. “Friendship bracelets,” she said, as though the concept were as timeless and obvious
as anything.

Of course, to me, it was wonderfully nostalgic. As a child of the eighties, I remember the
many iterations of the friendship bracelet: broken-heart pendants (two halves that make
a whole), knotted macramé bracelets, alphabet beads spelling out names, pony beads in
every fluorescent color. It was such a wonderfully simple tradition and one that has
extended its relevance into newer generations.

My daughter and her friends revived within me that spirit of honoring our relationships
in such a sweet and tangible way. So I decided to create a version using pieces from the
Raiz collection—something that retained the sentimentality and playfulness of the
original friendship bracelets, but that felt durable enough to be worn for years to come.

And it felt even more precious to design them for my daughter and myself. After all,
there is no union more worthy of such a sweet commemoration than that which exists
between mother and daughter. The result felt like a beautiful bridge between the
friendship bracelets of my childhood and the personalized jewelry of today.

Here’s how I made our modern friendship bracelets.

1. Start With Matching Pieces

The magic of the classic friendship bracelet was never really the bracelet itself. It was the
fact that you and someone you loved each had one. You could be miles apart, at school,
on vacation, or simply having a bad day, and there was still this physical reminder
connecting you to one another. For our bracelets, I wanted to preserve that idea without
making them exact replicas.

We each chose a Personalized Pendant featuring the same photograph of the two of us.
That became the visual centerpiece of both bracelets.

From there, I gave each bracelet its own personality. I added the MAMA Charm to mine
and the Wild Child Charm to hers. I also added the Antonia Protective Locke to both
bracelets as a symbol of our connection and a little reminder that, wherever life takes
her, she is loved and protected.

I love that the bracelets aren't identical. They're related, but they're not the same—just
like us.

2. Add a Photograph

There's something particularly powerful about wearing a photograph of someone you
love. A shared photograph became the centerpiece of our bracelets, epitomizing our
unbreakable bond in a small, visual keepsake that we simultaneously keep close.

3. Add Color

I wanted to retain some of the exuberant, nostalgic color of the friendship bracelets I
remembered from childhood. The old-school versions were rarely subtle; they were
bright, mismatched, playful. I wanted our version to have some of that same energy.
For my daughter, I chose the Sienna Red Agate Bracelet, while I chose the Alba Circle
Turquoise for myself. The different colors gave each bracelet its own character while still
making them feel like a pair.

4. Add a Little Ceremony

This might have been my favorite part. When I gave the bracelet to my daughter, we
didn't just hand them to each other and put them on. Instead, we took turns fastening
the bracelets onto one another's wrists. As we did, we each made a wish for the other
person.

Once both bracelets were on, we held hands and made one final wish for our
relationship.

It was simple, but it transformed the bracelets into something so much more.

childhood just because we're getting older.
